What is the difference between H-beam and I-beam?

2024-08-21

The I-beam flange is thick by the web and thin on the outside. The flange of H-shaped steel is of uniform section

HW is H-shaped steel height and flange width are basically equal; It is mainly used for steel core column in reinforced concrete frame structure column, also known as stiff steel column; It is mainly used for columns in steel structures

HM is H-shaped steel height and flange width ratio of roughly 1.33~~1.75 mainly in steel structure: used as steel frame column used as frame beam in the frame structure under dynamic load

HN is H-shaped steel height and flange width ratio is greater than or equal to 2, mainly used in beams; The use of I-beams is equivalent to HN section steel.

1, whether ordinary type or light type steel, because the section size are relatively high and narrow, so the moment of inertia of the two main sleeves of the section is large, therefore, generally only can be directly used in the web plane bending members or it is composed of lattice stress members. The axial compression member or the member that is perpendicular to the web plane and bent should not be used, which makes it have great limitations in the application range.

2, H-shaped steel is an efficient and economical cutting profile, due to the reasonable cross-section shape, they can make the steel more efficient and improve the cutting ability. Unlike the ordinary I-shaped steel, the flange of the H-shaped steel is widened, and the inner and outer surfaces are usually parallel, so that it can be easily connected with high-strength spiral and other members. Its size constitutes a reasonable series, complete models, easy to design and choose.

3, the flange of H-shaped steel is equal thickness, there are rolled sections, and there are combined sections composed of 3 plates welded. I-beams are rolled sections, due to poor production technology, the inner edge of the flange has a 1:10 slope. The rolling of H-beam is different from that of ordinary I-beam steel with only one set of horizontal rolls. Because of its wide flange and no inclination, it is necessary to add a set of vertical rolls to roll at the same time. Therefore, its rolling process and equipment are more complicated than ordinary rolling mills. The maximum height of rolled H-shaped steel that can be produced in China is 800mm, which exceeds the welded composite section only.

The national standard of hot-rolled H-shaped steel in China divides H-shaped steel into three categories: narrow flange, wide flange and steel pile, and its code names are hz, hk and hu. Narrow flange H-shaped steel is suitable for beams or bending members, while wide flange H-shaped steel and H-shaped steel piles are suitable for axial compression members or bending members. Compared with H-beam steel, w, ix and iy are inferior to H-beam steel under the premise of equal weight
